Kickoff to Learning: Celebrating the 2024 ‘A Successful Start’ Back to School Fair

School is right around the corner! For a family sending their child to school for the first time, the excitement is undeniable, but so are the jitters. At A Successful Start, held on July 27, we welcomed 376 family and community members to Bachman Lake Together for a day filled with resources, learning and fun to prepare to have a successful start to the upcoming school year. As one of our signature events, A Successful Start aims to provide holistic support to ensure the entire family is prepared to send their children to school – academically, socially and emotionally.

Holistic Resources

Families explored a variety of partner organizations providing resources. With over 23 partners in attendance, families were exposed to a variety of community organizations offering vital resources, information and giveaways to support their children and family’s success, both in and out of the classroom. Additionally, 270 backpacks and supply kits were distributed to young children. Thank you to FSG and United Way for donating supplies and everyone who volunteered their time to prepare backpacks for children.

Interactive Learning

Parents and adults had the chance to hear from a variety of speakers from partner organizations hosting interactive workshops centered around a variety of topics, such as exploring healthy brain foods for breakfast before school and a day in the life of a Pre-K student. Not only were these workshops informative, but they provided an opportunity for parents and caregivers to ask questions and connect with partners.

Vendors and Community

Outside in our Better Block @ Bachman Lake mini-park, children were able to run and play as families enjoyed free food and produce sponsored by North Texas Ford and Oak Cliff Veggie Project, respectively. Local vendors were also invited to promote and sell their sweet and savory treats. There was something for everyone to enjoy!

Closing Dance Performance

We marked the closing of A Successful Start with a dance performance by Ollimpaxqui Ballet Co. Highlighting rich culture through entertainment, Ollimpaxqui’s dancers gave a captivating performance and invited children to join them to learn a few dances. A big thank you to the City of Dallas’ Office of Arts & Culture for sponsoring the closing performance, and to the dancers for sharing their incredible talents with us!

A huge thank you to our dedicated volunteers and partners who joined us to make A Successful Start a success. Your time, effort, and enthusiasm were essential to the success of this event, and we couldn’t have done it without you! As we move into the new school year, we’re filled with optimism and excitement. We look forward to a successful school year ahead!
