26 Bachman Lake Parent Leaders Graduate from Community Action Network (CAN)

Building connections between parents and equipping them with skills to advance their children’s success in early education and beyond while encouraging other parents to do the same – these are the objectives of our Community Action Network (CAN). And on May 18th, 2023, we celebrated 26 parents who graduated from our 2022-2023 program.

"When I joined the Community Action Network (CAN), I realized that the time I had been spending at my children’s schools meant that I was already a parent leader. CAN gave me confidence to use my voice to create positive change in the community." – Carmen Maldonado

We are so proud of our CAN graduates for committing to this intensive nine-month program and taking this bold step to become advocates for their children and grow as community leaders. 🎉🎈

The CAN curriculum is divided into two levels to build strong foundations for our parents. In Level 1, parent leaders learn about the education system and the value of early childhood education as well as get connected to resources, and build a network of fellow parents. In Level 2, we leverage that strong foundation parents build to prepare them for leadership roles in the community, help them engage in early learning advocacy initiatives and inform best practices to support early childhood education in the neighborhood. To date, over 85% of CAN graduates (or Percentage) have served as leaders in community organizations.

Additionally, their children receive high-quality early childhood education through our partnership with AVANCE North Texas. While their parents are learning, their young children are learning, too!
